A

Advisory - The position in which more experience wizards can advise younger wizards on what they should do.

Annie Callahan - Nita and Dairine's aunt.  Also a wizard.  First appears in "A Wizard Abroad." Lives in Ireland.

Ailurin - The language cats communicate with.  Words in Ailurin used in "The Book of Night With Moon" and "To Visit the Queen" can be found here.

C

Copernicus - Nita and Kit's favorite place on the moon to think and relax.  They take Nita's parents there to convince them that wizardry is real.

D

Dairine Callahan - First makes appearance in "So You Want to be a Wizard", and receives her Wizardry in "High Wizardry."  She is Nita Callahan's younger sister.

Dai or Dai Stiho - The wizardry greeting.  Literal meaning: "Go Well."

E

Ed’rashtekaresket - The shark who sacrifices himself in Nita's place in Deep Wizardry as part of the Song of the Twelve.

Elements - There are five elements in Wizardry - Fire, Water, Air, Earth and Plasma.

Entropy -  The death of the universe and everything.  The Lone Power tricked life into accepting it, and now everyone must know death. Entropy is the transmutation of energy into a useless form.  Once all energy has been changed into a useless form, then the universe will be finally dead.

Errantry - "I am on errantry and I greet you " - the formal greeting to a wizard from another wizard on active status.

F

Fred - A life form which Nita and Kit call from a Black Hole.  Fred sacrifices himself to save Nita, Kit and Earth.

K

Khairelikoblepharehglukmeilichephriedosd’enagouni - Fred's full name.

Kit (Christopher) Rodriguez - The first wizard Nita meets, Kit is Nita's Wizardry partner, and the two go on Ordeal together, and defeat the Lone One many times.

L

Liused - the rowan tree in Nita's backyard who gave her the rowan wand which she used on her Ordeal. Nita also climbed Liused as a child, and they even had conversations, which Nita thought she imagined.

Lone Power, The -  The Power cast out from the other Powers That Be, he tricked life into accepting entropy and death.  The formal greeting to use to him is: ""Fairest and Fallen; greetings and defiance."

M

Macchu Picchu - a Macaw.  While Macchu Picchu (fondly known as Peach) is a bright macaw owned by Tom and Carl who can tell the future, and who occasionally gives cryptic, useful advice to Nita and Kit, that form is hiding his true identity of The Lone Power's sibling.

Manual, The - The book that some wizards receive to help them through their Wizardry.  Tom, Carl, Nita and Kit have the book versions, Dairine has a high-tech computer version and Ronan and Annie don't have one at all.

N

Nita Callahan - Main character of the Young Wizards series.  Finds her niche with living things and healing them.  Her partner in Wizardry is Kit (Christopher) Rodriguez, her aunt Annie is a wizard and her younger sister Dairine.

O

Ordeal -  All first-time wizards must go through an initiation in magic called an Ordeal.  The more powerful the novice, the longer and more dangerous the Ordeal.  Most last only a few days.

Overlay - In older countries, overlay occurs, where magic has been used so much its mark is permanently in the area.  It makes wizardry very difficult to perform, as the risk is there that one spell may knock into an older one, and the result may not be a pleasant one.

P

Peach - Macchu Picchu's less than favored nickname.

Ponch - Kit's dog, which is a mongrel cross that looks something like a black-Labrador-come-border-collie.  He has special powers of his own, that no-one understands yet.  Since Kit was able to talk to him in the Speech, Ponch has discovered Kit's mother is a good source for dog biscuits.

Powers That Be, The - The 'Powers That Be' are the beings that rule and look after the universe.

R

Red Five - The password Dairine chooses for her manual, the Beta version of the computerized manual, and also a reference to Star Wars.

Ronan - Wizard Nita meets in Ireland.  Gets very friendly with him.  He carries the Spear and is a descendent of one of the powers.  We don't know much about him and I don't know if we frankly care, but there's gotta be a Ronan lover out there or two who can enlighten us on his good points.  Uh, he carries some kind of weird Power in his head, St Michael the Winged Destroyer Archangel or something...

S

Saurians - Alien race who can also see hyperstrings that cats use to maintain gates, although this development is a recent one...

Senior - The position up from Advisory in the Wizardry chain of command. Seniors tend to be younger adults as Senior's tend to die before they have a chance to get old.

Speech, The - The wizardry language that everything can understand.  Is expressed written down as an Arabic-looking cursive.

S'reee - The dolphin Senior that contacts Nita and Kit in "Deep Wizardry."

Starsnuffer - One of the Lone Power's many nicknames, given for his tendency to literally snuff out stars.

T

Transit gating - One of the simpler spells in wizardry, one beginner wizards usually begin with.  It moves the wizard from one place to another.  Wizards must remember to spell their name right, else they are unwittingly changed, and remember to take enough oxygen with them if they are gating off planet.  As with all spells, wizardry takes energy, and a wizard may feel tired or/and hungry after transit gating somewhere.

W

Whalesark - The skin of a dead whale that can cause a wizard to transform into that whale for a limited period of time.  Used by Kit Rodriguez in "Deep Wizardry" until his body begins rejecting it.

Whispering - how European wizards and cats get their wizardry.
