"This is our shame --

This is the whole Ocean's glory:

this is the Song of the Twelve.

Hark to the story!"

[Extract from the Song of the Twelve - part of "The Singer's" lyrics.]

The Song of the Twelve

The Song of the Twelve was originally sung millions of years ago to keep the Lone Power at bay and secure the ocean.  The twelve celebrants paved the way for the ritual to be renewed every thousand years.  While the price is great for its completion, the reward is greater still - the ocean, and the islands within it, are safe for another thousand years.

The main players of the Song of the Twelve are the Silent Lord and the Pale Slayer.

The other nine main players are the Lord of the Humors.  They are the ones that are begged and pleaded by the Lone Power to join his side.  They are offered their heart's desire to join him.

The Untouched

The untouched are the Three Lords with perhaps the easiest parts of the Song.  They sing and reject Him rapidly.  There are three parts for the Untouched: The Singer, The Gazer and The Blue.

The Betrayed

The betrayed are the Three Lords who have an easier part - they give in to the Lone Power to get their heart's desire, at somewhat of a great cost.  There are three Lords who take the Betrayed parts: The Killer, The Wanderer and The Forager.

The Undecided

The longest, difficult songs are for The Undecided - those who do not decide either way to join the Lone Power or not.  These three Lords are The Sounder, The Grey Lord and The Listener.

The Silent Lord has the hardest part of all.  He or she has to willingly give up their life to save everyone else - not for their own glory but for everyone else's lives.

Arguably, however, the Pale Slayer had the hardest job of all until recently; being played by only one shark - the Master Shark - Ed’rashtekaresket.  He took the place of the latest Silent Lord - active wizard Juanita Callahan - and took the part on; sacrificing himself to destroy another incarnation of the Lone Power.  Ed’rashtekaresket was present at every Song of the Twelve as the Pale Slayer, and had to sacrifice and eat the whale playing the Silent Lord.  In a thousand years a replacement for him shall be found.  We mourn his passing as a once-temporary brother of the Art, and we will meet him in Timeheart.
